The "What, Why & How" of our wax wraps

Why use our vegan and beeswax wraps?

Here are our top five reasons why you should make the switch to BeeBee & Leaf food wraps:

  1. Stop plastic pollution - BeeBee and Leaf are your plastic free, planet friendly alternative to clingfilm. Being compostable they are zero waste helping to reduce plastic pollution towards a more sustainable life.
  2. Organic - Our 'GOTS' certified organic cotton is better for the planet, for your food and for you. With no pesticides or toxic dyes your food is wrapped in organic love!
  3. Beautiful - The 'Eco' option should be fun and inspiring, not bland and boring. This has always been at the heart of who we are at BeeBee and Leaf.
  4. Fresh food for longer - BeeBee & Leaf food wraps store your bread fresher than plastic ever could, slow the browning of your avocados, keep salad fresh for a week, house cheese happily without the nasty sweat and give your fruit, veg and leftovers breathing space!
  5. Cut food waste - Our breathable wraps stop food becoming sweaty. With less moisture your food lasts longer cutting down on food waste and saving you money.

How are BeeBee & Leaf wraps made?

Our wax wraps are handmade using only sustainably sourced ingredients. Organic cotton is infused with either a formula of beeswax, rosin, organic jojoba oil for our BeeBee wraps, or rice bran wax, sumac wax and resins for our Leaf wraps. They are then cut to size and lovingly packed before being delivered to your door or nearest store.

How do BeeBee wraps work?

Using the heat of your hands shape your wrap around bowls and food to create a breathable seal. They act like clingfilm yet are far more robust and friendlier to food.

Play around and feel how they are pliable when warm and hold their shape when cold.

Avoid using your wrap with raw meat and fish, dishwashers or microwaves.

What can you wrap in a BeeBee wrap?

Experiment and try whatever you normally eat!

Our Bread Wrap is perfect for keeping bread fresh, whilst it seals around bread to prevent staling it allows bread to breathe prolonging its life. It is also fabulous at packing up a picnic of foods which can be stored together e.g. a mountain of sandwiches! Fold the wrap in half, tapering the edges between your warm fingers to seal shut and you have a salad bag which keeps green leaves fresh for a week.

Our Large wrap is our most versatile size as you can always over wrap food. Try it with cheese, sandwiches, celery, melon, cover leftovers, make pouches for nuts and crisps...endless ideas!

Our Medium wrap is wonderful for small cheeses, children's sandwiches, bowls of leftovers, herbs bundles, pouching up nuts, half a squash.

Our Small wraps are brilliant for wrapping the end of cucumber, avocado or lemon, they cover jam jars, sauce and milk bottles, make the cutest of all the pouches and have, at times, rescued us when we lost the cork to opened wine!

Avoid raw meat and fish.

Can you reuse BeeBee & Leaf wraps?

Absolutely! Just give them a wipe or scrub in cold soapy water and they’ll be ready for their next use. If you follow our care instructions, your wraps should last for around a year. For more information, check out our video tutorials.

How do you wash a wrap?

In order to keep your wraps hygienic, it is important that you wash them after use in cool soapy water and drip dry. Be brave and give them a good scrub with a dish cloth or a soft bristle brush. You can use washing up liquid although opt for a soap with a lower alcohol content to be kinder to the wax.

Washing may not be necessary if you have wrapped dry food like crackers or a bread roll – just wipe off the crumbs ready to use again!

We do not recommend that you wrap raw meat or fish.

Some foods might stain your wraps adding to its personality! However, if you want to avoid stains then you need to avoid direct contact with foods that would typically stain clothes on contact, for example blackcurrant or beetroot etc.

Can you wrap meat or fish in BeeBee & Leaf wraps?

Since we recommend the wraps to be washed in cold water, we don't recommend them to be used directly on raw meat or fish just to be safe.

What you could do instead though, is store raw meat or fish in a bowl and cover it with a wrap.

Will the smell of certain foods stay on the wrap forever?

On the whole this doesn't tend to happen. We have noticed that some particularly smelly foods like onions can leave their scent on the wraps.

Our community of wrap-users like to commit one wrap for those foods. Alternatively, you can place your pungent food in a bowl and cover the top with a wrap to avoid the food touching the wrap.

Do BeeBee & Leaf wraps smell?

The BeeBee fragrance is direct from the hive itself and, like the colour of the wax, changes depending on where the bees have foraged. Some people are sensitive to the scent however it won't affect your food and will diminish with washing.

The Leaf fragrance is more like the scent of a candle (obviously a plain wax version). This also fades with washing and is more neutral than its beeswax sister.

How should I store my BeeBee and Leaf wrap?

BeeBee and Leaf wraps can be stored rolled as a direct swap for your clingfilm box. We tend to keep them rolled in a drawer or in a jar on the kitchen counter top.

You can also peg them to hang up artistically in your kitchen, store them alongside your chopping boards or fold them neatly into drawers.

Do I have to wash my BeeBee & Leaf wraps before using it?

BeeBee & Leaf Wraps are also produced in a food-safe workshop. Our extensive microbiology testing confirms that our workshop produces hygienically clean products. It is not necessary to wash them before use, but it’s totally up to you if you would still like to give them a little wash.

Our enclosed packaging ensures that our products are protected from being contaminated by anything it might come in contact with between leaving our workshop and reaching your kitchen.

Do I have to wash my BeeBee & Leaf wrap after every use?

Not necessarily. It depends what kind of food you've used with your wraps. After using them with something dry like bread, crackers or seeds, you can simply give your wrap a wipe down to get rid of any crumbs.

However, for something wetter like half an avocado, cheese or cooked meat, you will want to give your wrap a wash and a scrub in cool, soapy water.

Can you put BeeBee and Leaf wraps in the dishwasher?

No. Our wax wraps do not react well with excessive heat. We recommend hand washing your wraps in cold water and soap.

Can you put BeeBee and Leaf wraps in the freezer?

Yes! BeeBee Wraps are fine to go in the freezer. They might need to be brought back to room temperature to wrap something new though but they'll be fine!

Can you put BeeBee and Leaf wraps in the microwave?

No. Our wax wraps do not react well with excessive heat. Why not use a plate to cover whatever you're heating instead?

How long do BeeBee and Leaf wraps last?

With love, your BeeBee and Leaf wraps should last around a year or longer. The grippy quality of your wrap will reduce with use, however, they can still work effectively to wrap food. After this stage, you can rewax to extend the life of your wraps using our Relax and Rewax Drops

How do I dispose of or recycle my old wrap?

At the end of their useful life, and to ensure you leave no trace, we recommend composting your wraps in an active compost heap or using as a firelight on your wood-burning stove or BBQ!

Do you offer a vegan wax wrap?

Yes! All of our Leaf wraps are certified vegan. You can browse the range here.

Is jojoba oil/tree resin/beeswax safe with food/to eat?

Beeswax is edible, having similar negligible toxicity to plant waxes like Jojoba oil. The wax monoesters in beeswax are poorly hydrolysed in the guts of humans and other mammals, so they have insignificant nutritional value.

In food preparation, beeswax is known as E901 and is used as a coating for foods such as lemons and cheese; by sealing out the air, protection is given against mould growth. Soft gelatin capsules and tablet coatings may also contain beeswax, and it is often used in natural chewing gum.

Jojoba oil is edible but non-caloric and non-digestible, meaning the tiny particles of oil that may be digested will pass out of the intestines unchanged.

Rosin is an ingredient used in a multitude of industries from soap to stringed instruments, soda to sealing wax. Rosin is used as a glazing agent in medicines and chewing gum. It is denoted by E number E915. (E numbers are codes for substances that are permitted to be used as food additives.)

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients listed, please refrain from use.

Ethics and Sustainability

What’s the difference between conventional and organic cotton?

The production of conventional cotton puts a massive strain on the environment: conventional cotton farming uses more pesticides than any other area of agricultural production and is a major cause of freshwater pollution due to it's high use of fertilisers and pesticides.

Growing cotton organically means there is either significantly less or no pesticide use so it has a much less detrimental environmental impact.

We've always pledged to use GOTS organic cotton (Global Organic Textile Standard) as they regulate how the cotton is grown and also what dyes are used, along with making sure they are disposed of correctly. They also focus on water usage and keeping this as low as possible.

What makes your Leaf wraps vegan?

We understand that not all people are comfortable using beeswax so we created a range of plant-based Leaf wraps in beautiful designs.

Our plant-based Leaf Wraps use the same 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton as our BeeBee Wraps and are coated with a mixture of rice bran wax, sumac wax & tree resins. The plant waxes are GM-free.

The scent of the wraps is slightly different too so these wraps can provide an alternative to our beeswax variety if you are sensitive to the honey scent.

Does using beeswax harm bees?

We completely understand that not everyone is comfortable with using beeswax.

We believe that beekeeping in a more humane and ethical way, whilst following DEFRA's strict rules, helps to support the honey bee population. Our beeswax is sourced from British bees whose keepers and farmers adhere to the Bee Farmers Association’s Welfare Code of Conduct.

Bees produce beeswax to store honey and our beekeepers only take the excess honey leaving more than enough to support the hive’s population. Bees will always make honey regardless of how much they need and already have, so taking the excess beeswax along with honey is not detrimental to the hive and does, in fact, prevent swarming.

We're always happy to talk these concerns through with you and you can check out the website for more info on the provenance of our ingredients.

Are BeeBee & Leaf fair and ethical?

We work hard to treat all our staff, suppliers and of course the environment fairly. Using clear, honest and open lines of communication.

Where possible we will source organically certified ingredients which ensures not only a pure product but also a fairer deal with those who made it along the way.

We always strive to be more ethical, fairer and a transparent company. We are always happy to be asked questions if you want to delve deeper. We welcome it!

Don’t you have to use a lot of water and detergent when you wash them each time?

To reduce water use wash your dishes. Pop some cold water and washing up liquid in your washing up bowl before you plan to do your dishes, you can wash your BeeBee first. After it’s put aside to dry, you can then add warm water to do your dishes. That way no water or detergent is wasted!

Are BeeBee & Leaf wraps environmentally friendly?

Our wraps are made from organic cotton infused with one of two natural, compostable wax formulas.

They are a plastic free, natural alternative to cling film that can be reused and composted, helping to reduce plastic pollution towards a more sustainable life.

Our wraps also have a breathable seal that stops food becoming sweaty, making your food last longer and cutting down on food waste!

Plus, our wraps can be rewaxed to extend their life, making them your kitchen friend for years.

Do you have any certificate of the ingredients being safe with food?

Since beeswax and vegan wax wraps are a new innovation, there is currently no bespoke certification specific to the product.

However, we have carried out extensive microbiological and food contact testing, and our wraps are considered safe for use with foods, even fattier foods like cheese and avocado.

We do not encourage use with raw meat or fish.

All of our wrap ingredients are safe to be used with food.

If you are allergic to any of these ingredients, please refrain from use.
